The Direction

When it comes to creating a sacred space that is Vastu compliant, finding the best direction plays a pivotal role in harnessing the auspicious energy from the universe suited for that particular space. The ideal direction for Pooja Room is northeast, north north east corner of your home. However if this direction is not available, then you must build this space in east north east or west direction of your home. The idols should also be placed in the east or west direction of Pooja Room.

Don’t: Never create your Pooja Room in south direction since this direction attracts negative energy in that space.

Design of Pooja Room

You should treat your Pooja Room like a sacred womb. It should have a low ceiling; gopura or pyramid shaped ceiling help channel divine energies from the universe. It also adds symmetry and aesthetic beauty to your Pooja Room. Also create a threshold and a two door entry if you have enough space for it.

Idol Placement in Pooja Room

The idols and images of God should be kept few inches away from the walls. The idols shouldn’t lean on the walls. By keeping them some distance away from the walls helps in enveloping them with the fragrance of incense. Apart from this, idols must be kept at least six inches above the ground. The idols, statues or the images of God must be kept clean. You must ensure that your Pooja Room is well ventilated and dust free. Clean it daily and keep it full of fragrance.

Don’t: Do not keep photos of dead (ancestors) or paintings depicting violence or satanic activities. Do not keep any broken idol or damaged image.

Sacred Storage in Pooja Room

A storage space should be created in the Pooja Room to store all your religious books, lamps, oil and other Pooja related items. This storage space should be located in southeast direction.

Don’t: Do not store anything above the idols and images of god. The storage space should be below the altar.

Lights and Colours to be used in Pooja Room

One of the most important Vastu tips for Pooja Room is its colour and lighting. Use light colours like white, light yellow, light blue as they help creating an auspicious environment best suited for prayer and meditation.

If you wish to use marble in your Pooja Room, then opt for white colour or pale yellow. If you light a diya or keep a lamp in Pooja Room, then keep it in southeast or eastern side of the Room.

Additional Vastu Rules for Pooja Room

• Pooja Room should not be placed in store room, basement, bedroom, first or above floors, below kitchen, toilet or staircase.
• In case of space constraint if you have to create Pooja Room in bedroom, then make sure that your feet are not pointing towards the temple space. Place the Pooja space in northeast corner of bedroom. However try your best that your Pooja Room should not be in bedroom at any cost, since the aura or vibrations emanated in Pooja space disturbs the ones sleeping in that space.
• If your home is made of more than one floor, then Pooja Room should be built on the ground floor and at the centre of the home. Centre of the home is very auspicious for Pooja and prayer.
• The idols, statues and images of God should never face towards the south. Never keep any broken idol or worn out statues of God in your Pooja Room.
• One should never place the idols on the niches of wall. Idols and statues shouldn’t be placed directly in front of the entrance door of the Pooja Room.
• If there are doors and windows in your Pooja Room, they should be in the North or East walls.
