According to Hinduism, Tulsi  (Basil) is a very auspicious plant. In India, you will find a well-tended Tulsi plant in the house of every Hindu. Tulsi is considered to be Goddess Lakshmi incarnate. In Hindu mythological tales, sun is regarded as Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi the grand consort of Lord Vishnu.

Tulsi plant is not only just kept at homes, it forms an important part of most of the Hindu religious ceremonies. Tulsi is worshiped as Goddess (Tulsi Mata) itself. According to Vastu Shastra, the ideal location of Tulsi plant is east or north-east, where it gets ample amount of sunlight.

  1. The ideal location of this holy plant is eastern side of your home. If that is not possible, then find a space like window in north or north-eastern direction of your home, and place the Tulsi plant there. Keep the window open so as to allow sufficient direct sunlight. Tend to the plant – water it daily.
  2. The place surrounding the Tulsi plant should be absolutely clutter free. It should not be cluttered with unused or broken things like old shoes, brooms, mops or garbage. In order to maintain the harmony of the space, light a diya in the evening under the Tulsi plant, and light an incense in the morning.
  3. Keep the plant on a platform that is higher than the foundation of the home. It should be treated like a temple itself.
  4. Never keep Tulsi plant in even numbers, but in odd numbers like 1, 3, 5 etc.
  5. Do not grow the plant along with cactus or any plant belonging to thorn plant species.
  After a careful consideration of the above mentioned Vastu points, when the Tulsi plant is grown in the home, it not only brings in the divine vibrations but also guards the house against any negativity or evil. It cleanses the space inside the house and also positively energizes the lives of the inhabitants.

Apart from this, Tulsi plant has innumerable medicinal properties that can be harvested in order to fight a variety of bacterial infections.
